The English Department and our Fifth Form pupils have been involved in a live broadcast of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s rehearsals for Romeo and Juliet, led by Director Erica Whyman.
On Thursday 25 January, after the live session, the students participated in a debate surrounding the staging of the pivotal ‘Balcony Scene’ (Act II, Scene II). They discussed what they liked about the performance and the changes they would make if they could. The debate offered opportunities to explore ideas about themes, reflections of society and the desire to keep the authentic Elizabethan-style of performance. This helped them to focus on an essential skill for GCSE study: awareness of writer’s intentions and impact on audience.
