Earlier this month, pupils from Years 3, 5 and 6 at St John’s Prep School, Enfield, Potters Bar, attended a Taiko Drumming Workshop, led by experts from InspireWorks.

This was part of a series of termly world music workshops which the Music Department organises for Upper School pupils in the Prep School.

Students had the chance to get hands-on with genuine Taiko drums all the way from Japan, and they learnt about the different aspects that makes Taiko drumming unique.

These included:

  • The stance to adopt whilst playing
  • The different zones of the drum of which to hit
  • The physicality involved when playing as an ensemble,
  • The camaraderie between drummers, something which is highly emphasized in Taiko drumming.

A gallery of images from the workshop can be viewed on the school’s Facebook site, whilst a video from the session can be watched (above).
