From the Classroom to Cambridge: A Deep Dive into Development

Posted: 4th December 2025

This week, our Head Boy and Deputy Head Boy stepped away from their usual studies to embark on an exclusive, high-level work experience placement at the University of Cambridge. Staying at one of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions, they were granted a rare “behind-the-scenes” look at the sophisticated operations of a university Development Office.

The placement offered a rigorous introduction to the world of Charity Development and Philanthropy. Rather than just observing, the students gained hands-on insight into the strategic mechanics of charitable organizations. They explored the foundational steps of setting up a charity and the complex management structures required to keep such global institutions running smoothly.

A key focus of their time was the intersection of technology and human relations. The boys delved into the intricacies of database systems, learning how data is utilized to drive institutional growth. This was paired with a masterclass in donor relations, where they discovered the art of maintaining meaningful, long-term connections with supporters—a vital skill for any successful non-profit venture.

Beyond the logistical side, the experience provided a deep dive into the legal frameworks that govern higher education charities. Understanding the statutory regulations and compliance requirements gave the students a professional perspective on the responsibilities that come with managing significant public and private funds.

This unique opportunity allowed the Head Boy and Deputy Head Boy to apply their leadership skills in a professional setting, bridging the gap between secondary education and the professional world. They return to school not only with a greater understanding of the charitable sector but also with a sharpened set of analytical and interpersonal tools that will undoubtedly serve them in their future careers.

Congratulations to both for representing the school with such distinction at one of the world’s leading academic hubs!
