Pastoral Care

Pupils’ welfare is our top priority. Rather than being a discrete aspect of our approach, comprehensive and effective pastoral care underpins the pupil experience at St. John’s.

Pupils have form tutors and heads of year who are readily available to advise and encourage them throughout their time at St. John’s. In their academic and pastoral relationships, pupils learn to talk comfortably and openly with adults they trust. Pupils have full access to the designated safeguarding lead and to other members of the school’s safeguarding team, who intervene as necessary if there are welfare concerns.

St. John’s comprehensive personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education programme is delivered by teachers at the Prep School and a subject specialist at the Senior School. It has been carefully designed to prepare pupils for life in modern British society. Pupils learn about health and well-being, equality and diversity, and families and relationships. Circle time at Prep, and group tutorials at Senior, help pupils to explore and discuss social and health issues.

Pupils’ mental health is prioritised. The majority of our staff are trained as mental health first aiders and we take part in Children’s Mental Health Week each year. Professional face-to-face and online psychological support is provided to pupils, whenever required, from our counsellor.

Our assemblies, reflection sessions, school council, peer mentoring programme and workshops for parents and carers are all further examples of our commitment to providing effective pastoral care. Parents and teachers also have access to bespoke, evidence-based resources and support from Tooled Up Education.

We aim to provide holistic support to everyone in our school community, across all areas of family life, which is why our school subscribes to a digital platform called: Tooled Up Education. This gives our families and our staff privileged access to a digital library, packed full of evidence-based tips, activities, educational webinars and enlightening podcasts, on all matters relating to mental health, aspiration, learning, digital life and family life. Tooled Up is curated by one of the UK’s leading experts on parental engagement in children’s lives and learning, Dr Kathy Weston and her experienced team.

At Tooled Up, they are passionate about bridging the gap between research and real-life parenting. They understand that loving parents want to do the ‘right thing’ and that parenting is full of joys, but also many challenges. Our children have a vast educational and life journey ahead of them. It is important that they are ‘Tooled Up;’ equipped psychologically with the resilience required to reach their destinations safely and successfully.

As a ‘Tooled Up’ parent, you will:

●       Feel extremely supported on your parenting journey.

●       Be able to ask questions about any aspect of your child’s development and get evidence-based answers.

●       Be able to request resources, webinars, attend online talks, and feel part of a community of parents committed to doing what is optimal for their children.
