St. John’s Senior School Flying Club has opened its doors to new members for the new academic year, with an exciting new wings course launched in partnership with British Young Pilots (BYP) from September 2026. The club is open to pupils in every year group at our senior school in Enfield, whether they are simply curious about flying or already dreaming of a career in the airline industry.
Learning to fly with British Young Pilots
Members attend a weekly lesson led by a BYP flying instructor. Each session is split between theory and practice. In the classroom, pupils cover the knowledge every pilot needs, from physics and meteorology to navigation and engineering. They then put that learning to work on a desktop flight simulator, building real flying skills lesson by lesson.
Taking to the skies
Pupils also have the option of three 30 minute flights in a real aircraft each year, giving them the chance to put their skills to the test in the air. These flights are booked separately through Great British Flying Club at £99 each.
A first step towards a career in aviation
For pupils considering a future as a pilot, or elsewhere in the airline industry, the club offers a genuine head start. Members can progress through the BYP syllabus, passing civilian flying tests and exams along the way, and a committed pupil can leave school holding a private pilot licence (PPL).
The benefits reach well beyond the cockpit. Flying builds confidence and self-esteem, and it brings STEM subjects to life in a way few other activities can.
Joining the club
Pupils can join for a single term or stay with the club as they progress. Sessions cost £33 each, paid before the start of term, with instalment options available. We will arrange the timetable so that as many pupils as possible can take part.
