St. John’s Sixth Form Delve into Scientific History with Sir David C. Clary

Posted: 15th November 2025

On Monday evening, our Sixth Form students ventured into the profound history of modern discovery, attending an inspiring lecture hosted by the Oxford University Society. The talk, titled “Science in Oxford and Beyond — from Schrödinger and the Lost Scientists of WWII to the Present Day,” offered a sweeping narrative of how global conflict and intellectual brilliance have shaped the scientific landscape.

Engaging with Excellence

The highlight of the evening was the opportunity for our students to meet the distinguished speaker, Professor Sir David C. Clary FRS. As a Fellow of the Royal Society and a former President of Magdalen College, Oxford, Sir David offered invaluable advice to our aspiring academics.

Our Sixth Formers engaged in high-level discussions with the Professor, demonstrating their own intellectual curiosity and passion for the sciences. The evening was made even more memorable as students received personally signed copies of Sir David’s books, providing them with a lasting memento of this prestigious encounter.

Building Future Scholars

This event served as a powerful motivator for our future scientists and scholars, bridging the gap between textbook theory and the high-impact world of university research. Experiences like these are vital in helping our students visualize their own place within the global scientific community.

A huge thank you to Mrs. Zaman (Head of Sixth Form) for organizing yet another enriching opportunity that challenges our pupils to look “beyond” the classroom and toward the frontiers of modern knowledge.
